LED LIGHT THERAPY

Who would have thought that scientific experiments conducted by NASA on how to grow plants in space would have led to the most significant break through the beauty industry has ever seen!

 

The LED lights they were experimenting with as a means to grow plants in space helped astronauts recover faster from injuries sustained during weightlessness.

 

LED activates skin cells with pulses of low level, non-thermal light energy. The cell converts light energy into fuel (much like photosynthesis) in turn stimulating the cells to produce proteins and lipids essential for building and repairing the skin. More research confirmed that LED could speed healing, reduce inflammation and stimulate fibroblasts and collagen production, by as much as 200% within just 24 hours of treatment!

 

Given LED photo-stimulation can provide the skin cells with the energy to heal faster and produce more collagen it makes sense that it would also be able to fix minor damage. Trials were undertaken on sun damaged, pigmented and wrinkled skin. How Red & Blue Lights Work

 

LED blue light therapy helps to kill the acne causing bacteria, reduce inflammation and provide a general rejuvenation effect on the skin.

 

Acne begins when the pores become clogged or blocked and bacteria starts to grow, resulting in whiteheads and blackheads. The whitehead or blackhead releases its contents onto the surface of the skin and either heals or, it can rupture and inflammatory acne can take place.

 

The combination of blue, red and infrared lights get down to the core of the acne causing bacteria. The red lights help to reduce inflammation while at the same time, the blue lights help to kill the acne causing bacteria.

About LED Light Therapy

 

The body is made up of cells that are generally capable of healing and reproducing on their own using naturally occurring cellular energy known as adenosine triphosphate or ATP. When the skin is damaged, ATP stimulates cell regeneration to heal and restore the injured area.

 

Factors such as poor nutrition, a person’s age, and the general condition of the skin determine how slow or how fast cells may heal. Scientific studies also found that light can stimulate the production of ATP for better cell renewal otherwise known as photo rejuvenation. Skin care specialists take advantage of the therapeutic effects of light by using LED (for Light Emitting Diode Technology) to heal skin conditions during a light therapy session. Not just any light ray may be used to stimulate skin cells. There are harmful rays that can burn the skin or cause skin cancer. LED is ideal for light therapy because it emits a low level power that does not irritate or burn the skin.

 

 

How LED Light Therapy works

 

 

Your Skin is made up of 3 layers: the Epidermis, the Dermis and the Subcutaneous.

The Epidermis is the outer layer made up of non-living cells that form your body’s protective cover. These cells are constantly being shed and replaced by new ones. The new cells are made in the lower part of the Epidermis. These are called Keratinocytes which produce the tough, fibrous protein called Keratin.

 

The next layer is the Dermis. It is thicker and contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. There are two main proteins in the Dermis or second layer of skin:

 

  • Collagen, approximately 3/4 of the Dermis is made up of this protein which is responsible for the strength and plumpness of the skin.

  • Elastin, which is responsible mainly for the elasticity of the skin.

 

The next layer is the Subcutaneous, it is the layer that contains the fatty tissues and stores energy, provides warmth and a cushion etc.

 

People need certain wavelengths of light similar to the way plants need sunlight to thrive. LED Light Therapy translates the process of plant photosynthesis into the workings of human skin cells; stimulating the body’s own cells to build new proteins the same way plants use Chlorophyll to convert sunlight into cellular building blocks.

 

Your skin and other body tissues have the ability to absorb light and use it as a source of energy to stimulate cellular regeneration. The light rays that are emitted from LED are beneficial for your skin, as they contain no UV rays. The problem with getting these same light rays from the sun is that you also get the harmful UV rays. These harmful rays can do more damage to your skin than good. With LED Light Therapy, when the correct wavelengths of light are closely and intensely flowed into the body, some pretty startling things start to occur:

 

 

Collagen and Elastin are produced in cells called Fibroblasts. Inside these cells is a smaller cellular structure called Mitochondria.

 

 

Mitochondria are responsible for converting nutrients into an energy carrier known scientifically as Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). This (ATP) fuels the cell’s activities; it basically gives the cells the needed energy to do their job. This is the reason Mitochondria are frequently referred to as the powerhouse of the cell.

 

LED sends light rays into the Fibroblast cells, which in turn excite the Mitochondria into producing in some cases up to 10 times more ATP, but usually 2 to 4 times. This fuels the cell’s activities, which causes more of the needed Collagen and Elastin to be produced, as well as other needed materials for the skin.

 

The Collagen plumps up the skin to fill in fine lines and wrinkles while the Elastin helps to firm skin that has begun to sag. This whole LED Light Therapy process results in skin that appears more youthful, smoother, healthier and more radiant!

 

Session

You may start a session with a microdermabrasion procedure to remove dead skin cells for more effective light penetration. Specific lights are then beamed at areas to be treated for a few minutes. Depending on one’s age, skin tone, diet, and lifestyle, results may be observed immediately or after a series of sessions held one week apart. Some may need 6 to 8 sessions to see dramatic results on their skin. In between sessions, the specialist may prescribe topical skin treatments or a skin care regimen to complement and boost the effects of the LED light therapy sessions.
